Canucks Assistant GM Derek Clancey Joins Toronto Maple Leafs
Departure from Vancouver
Derek Clancey, the first person hired by Jim Rutherford when he became Canucks president of hockey operations in 2021, is leaving the NHL club to join the Toronto Maple Leafs.
New Role in Toronto
Clancey has been named the assistant general manager of the Maple Leafs, a team with Stanley Cup aspirations. His departure from Vancouver comes after just two seasons, but he played a key role in the Canucks' rebuilding process.
In Vancouver, Clancey was responsible for player personnel decisions and oversaw the team's scouting department. He also played a role in the development of young players, such as Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes.
The Canucks have hired Stan Smyl to replace Clancey as assistant general manager. Smyl is a former Canucks captain and has been with the organization for over 40 years.
