A major worldwide tech outage believed to have been caused by a flawed anti-viral update from US cyber security company CrowdStrike has hit Australia, taking down banks, airlines and media outlets.

The outage began around 5am AEST and has affected a wide range of organisations, including the Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, ANZ, NAB, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Telstra, Optus and Nine Entertainment.

Users have reported experiencing a range of problems, including being unable to access websites, use online banking or make phone calls.

CrowdStrike has confirmed that it is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it.

The outage is a major disruption for businesses and consumers alike, and it is unclear how long it will take to resolve.
