West Michigan Heatwave Persists as Grand Rapids Braces for Unseasonably Warm 87°F Today

Grand Rapids, Mich.

Heatwave Continues Amidst Cooler Relief Midweek

West Michigan's relentless heatwave shows no signs of abating as Grand Rapids steams under an anticipated high of 87°F today. This unseasonably warm weather follows the region's record-breaking temperatures last week, which saw Grand Rapids reach 90°F.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory for West Michigan, urging residents to limit outdoor activities and stay hydrated. The NWS also warns of potential heat-related illnesses, especially for the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions.

According to the NWS, the heatwave is expected to continue through Tuesday, with temperatures hovering in the mid-80s. However, relief is in sight as a cooler air mass is forecasted to move into the region midweek, bringing temperatures down to the mid-70s by Wednesday.

Given the ongoing heatwave, the City of Grand Rapids has opened several cooling centers for residents to seek relief from the heat. These centers provide air-conditioned spaces, water, and other essential services.

Residents are advised to take precautions to stay safe during the heatwave, such as staying indoors during the hottest hours of the day, wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and drinking plenty of fluids. Those who must work or spend time outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded areas and avoid strenuous activity.

For more information on cooling centers and heat-related safety tips, visit the City of Grand Rapids website or the NWS website.
